Inside Microsoft's war room

Posted on 11:52 by Unknown

A look at Microsoft's Security Response Center in Redmond

A good deal of Microsoft's current security practices can be traced to painful lessons learned over the past 10 years. Microsoft's Security Response Center, at company headquarters in Redmond, Wash., grew out of those lessons.

Shown here, a sign outside Microsoft's twin security "war rooms" marks the way. One room is for handling the technical work of bug hunting, while the other focuses on what to say to customers and the public. A door connects the two rooms.

1980s Transfomers Wristwatch Commercials

Posted on 10:50 by Unknown
Here's a question: would these Transfomers wristwatches have sold even better in the west if they had simply ran this Japanese ad exactly as-is? See the dreadful Western ad after the jump for the same item, albeit lacking the brand.

Or, perhaps, its merely that they could sell them better today if they ran these ads now. As with anything, the nostalgic hankering is usually preferable to the thing being hankered after.

Nubrella Offers Dorky Hands-Free Umbrella

Posted on 14:15 by Unknown

The Nubrella may as well be spelled N00b-rella for all the sex appeal it has. It's a hands-free brolly designed to not only keep your hair perfectly placed, but to protect your entire upper body from the elements.

This "umbrella of the 21st century" attaches via shoulder straps and has a stabilizing handle. Because it wraps around the torso, the $60 canopy won't catch the wind and turn inside out: the makers claim that it will withstand gusts of up to 50mph. What you should really watch out for, though, is the stones that will be thrown at you by gangs of laughing children.

Still, the company remains optimistic that this ridiculous device will become popular:

With its sleek futuristic oval design, nubrella will be seen as the new “must have” fashion accessory around the world.

Intel To Sell Budget PCs In Europe And The US

Posted on 10:07 by Unknown

Intel plans to bring its OLPC killer, the Classmate PC, to the US and Europe. With the Asus Eee PC and Everex's Cloudbook doing ever-so-well in the super cheap portable market, it's no surprise that Intel wants a piece of the action, too.

According to Reuters, "computer makers will start selling Intel-designed Classmate PCs in those markets for about $250 to $350". That leads us to believe that the machines will be made under license rather than by Intel itself. Are undeveloped nations becoming a test ground for new niche products in the developed world? We'll answer that when we see a Swarovski-encrusted Life Straw.

Google Sinks Cash into Undersea Cable

Posted on 08:37 by Unknown

Google has joined the Unity consortium, which will build a $300 million fiber optic cable linking the US and Japan. The 7.68 Tbps, 10,000 kilometer (6,200 mile) will increase capacity for ever growing internet traffic between continents.

Google seems to be taking a keen interest in the infrastructure of the internet, first with the auction of the 700Mhz radio spectrum, and now undersea cables. And no wonder. The search giant needs always on, unfettered connectivity, and having to rely on tiered-internet happy ISPs for that connection is doubtless a big worry. Much better to control the whole shebang, end to end.

About the stations:
Just like a TV set, live Internet television depends on the origin and not on the software that displays the TV images. Some stations can be off line due to their servers' overload or Internet traffic jams. Not all stations have a 24 Hours schedule. The video quality is dependent on the broadcaster's own bandwidth; the higher the bandwidth, the better the video quality you will receive. For most TV and radio channels, a modem speed of 56Kb/s is required. For the broadband TV stations, you need 300 Kb/s.

Tricks of the Microsoft Office 2007 Gurus

Posted on 11:59 by Unknown

It has been estimated that although Microsoft Office 2007 contains more than 10,000 features, the average user is familiar with only about 150 of them.

That means that most people have left a whopping 98.5 percent of Office territory unexplored. In practical terms, it also means that most people aren’t taking advantage of the power of the Office suite. It means that most people work inefficiently by trying to make the techniques they know serve a wide range of situations, and it means that most people work ineffectively because they aren’t aware of techniques that could solve their problems and add sophistication to their documents.
Tricks of the Microsoft Office 2007 Gurus is designed to give you the information you need without making you wade through ponderous explanations and interminable technicalities. To make your life easier, this book includes various features and conventions that help you get the most out of the book.

Vehicle Manager v3.50 Build 114

Posted on 11:50 by Unknown

The best way to avoid problems is to stay on top of “simple things” like changing the oil and rotating the tires. That may be easier said than done…until now.

With iambic’s Vehicle Manager, you can proactively track all this and more in the palm of your hand. It can handle information about one or more cars. Along with helping you keep track of your car’s maintenance schedule, it also does a great job keeping track of vehicle-related expenses (such as fuel, mileage) and insurance data.

The Oxford Thesaurus: An A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms

Posted on 11:47 by Unknown

There is an art to a fine thesaurus. It requires a delicate balance of many qualities. When you seek the right word, you want a thesaurus that's useful helpful, fruitful, effective), convenient (handy, expedient, user-friendly), and current (contemporary, informed, up-to-date). The Oxford Thesaurus combines the best of two worlds: an A to Z arrangement of words and a Roget's-style index. The first search is as simple as looking up a word in a dictionary, while the synonym index helps fine-tune the intense lexicographic hunt.

Don't Get Burned on EBay: How to Avoid Scams and Escape Bad Deals

Posted on 11:13 by Unknown

Lots of books tell you how to buy and sell on eBay. But what if something goes horribly awry? Do you have to chalk it up to a "lesson learned," lick your wounds and move on? Not a chance. Don't Get Burned on eBay offers relevant lessons based on real-life stories posted on eBay's Answer Center. With sharp, witty rhetoric, veteran eBay user Shauna Wright (co-founder of the popular web site WhoWouldBuyThat.com, shows eBay veterans and newcomers alike how to avoid those nasty scenarios, and how to pull themselves out of the muck if they've already fallen in.

Six entertaining (and hair-raising) chapters cover real problems that people have encountered with bidding, payment, shipping, packaging, dealing with other eBayers, and coping with the eBay system. This book is for anyone who's ever used eBay, because even veteran buyers and sellers often don't know the intricacies of eBay's and PayPal's rules. Don't Get Burned on eBay will leave you well-informed and better protected from potential pitfalls. The book's extensive glossary and numerous in-depth sidebars also make the book useful to people who haven't yet taken the plunge into eBay.
