Posted on 03:45 by Unknown

If you have a dual-boot system with Linux and Windows, then you probably know that when you start your system first Linux boot loader appears showing Linux as well as Windows boot entries and if you select Windows from the list, it starts Windows.

Suppose a situation when you want to remove Linux from your system and want to use only Windows, then how will you do it?

Many times people delete the partitions having Linux installed from “Disk Manager” but it doesnt remove Linux completely. The Linux boot loader still appears at startup but since you deleted Linux partitions, the boot loader gets corrupted and your system becomes unusable.

So if you are also facing this problem or you faced this problem in past and could not get a working solution, then read this tutorial and you can follow it if you find yourself in a similar situation.

This tutorial will help you in completely removing Linux from a dual-boot system:

1. First you’ll need to boot using Windows setup CD. You can use Windows 98 Setup CD or Windows 2000, XP, 2003 CD or Windows Vista, Server 2008 DVD.

A. Using Windows 98 CD:

Boot into Command Prompt and provide following command:

fdisk /MBR

Now exit from command prompt by typing Exit and press Enter.

B. Using Windows 2000, XP, 2003 CD:

Enter into “Recovery Console” by pressing “R“, select your Windows installation and enter administrator password. Now provide following command:

fixmbr

Press “Y” to confirm and type Exit to exit from recovery console.

C. Using Windows Vista, Server 2008 DVD:

Boot using setup DVD and click on “Repair Computer” link, then click on “Command Prompt”. Now navigate to your DVD drive using CD command and at last provide following command:

bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr

Exit from Command prompt and restart your system.

Thanks to Ramesh Kumar (Fellow MVP) to provide this trick.

2. The above commands will remove the Linux boot loader from startup and you’ll be able to directly boot into Windows.

3. If you have not deleted Linux partitions, then you can delete them using “Disk Manager” tool in Windows.

Windows System Properties - Add Custom Manufacturer Properties

Posted on 04:40 by Unknown

This tip lets you include company and support information on the System Properties page in Control Panel. This is especially useful if you run a computer store and want your customers to be reminded where they bought their PC and where to get technical support.

To add the manufacturer and support information you need to create two new files in the Windows system directly, normally "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" for Windows 95, 98 and Me and "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32" for Windows NT and 2000.

The first file is a text file called "OEMINFO.INI". To create the file open notepad and copy the template below, make any changes and save the file in the System directory.

OEMINFO.INI Template

[General]
Manufacturer=Your Company, Inc.
Model=Your Computer Model
SupportURL=http://your.support.site/
LocalFile=c:\your\local\support\file.htm

[Support Information]
Line1=first line
Line2=second line
Line3=third line
Line4=fourth line
...
LineN=nth line
; Create as many lines as you need by incrementing the Line number

The other file you need to create is a logo file. This is a standard Windows bitmap file (172 x 172 pixels), saved as "OEMLOGO.BMP" in the Windows System directory.

Once you have created both these files open System Properties from Control Panel and your company information and logo will be displayed. The details you entered in the [Support Information] section will show up when you click on the Support Information button.

The South East Asia-Middle East-West Europe 4

Posted on 02:56 by Unknown

The South East Asia-Middle East-West Europe 4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) project is the fourth project in the SEA-ME-WE series. On 27th March 2004, a consortium of 16 international telecommunications companies signed construction and maintenance agreements for the new optical fibre submarine cable system linking South East Asia to Europe via the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East with Terminal Stations in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France. The contract is being awarded jointly to Alcatel Submarine Networks, France and Fujitsu Ltd., Japan and the estimated project cost is of the order of US$ 500 million.

The total length of the SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable system will span approximately 20,000 km which consists of the main backbone across the Eastern and Western worlds plus the extension links in various countries. The system is amongst the most economical cable systems in the region and will be built with state-of-the-art Terabit DWDM technology to achieve ultra fast terabit per second connectivity. The project will support telephone, internet, multimedia and various broadband data applications.

Currently, the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable system is fully functional and will continue to be operational during its expected lifespan. This cable will also support SEA-ME-WE 4 for restoration and vice versa. The target commissioning date for the SEA-ME-WE 4 project is set in the 3rd quarter 2005 and once the cable is fully operation, phased activations of capacity to meet growing bandwidth demand have been anticipated. A SEA-ME-WE 4 Management Committee has been set up to make decisions on issues concerning the project, such as whether it will be possible for new countries to be linked to the project in the future. The organization structure of the Management Committee is shown below.

The SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable will benefit hundreds of millions of people communicating along the route between Singapore, France and beyond. The construction of this cable system is testimony to the growing demand for high capacity broadband links that are essential in today’s world of high speed international connectivity and online business. Many developing markets are expected to see strong growth in the short term as efforts are made to improve and expand the broadband technology infrastructure.

Disable and Stop Restart or Reboot After Installing Windows Update

Posted on 02:50 by Unknown

Microsoft Windows Automatic Updates is a component for Windows XP and Vista that can schedule and automatically download and install important security updates from Microsoft in background without using the browser. The updates are marked by Microsoft as high-priority updates, and most of the updates fix security holes identified with Microsoft software.

This feature can be very useful for any Windows users but it can be terrifying as well. Here’s an example. Let’s say you are working on a document on your computer and you have to leave the office for a few hours to meet a client. You think that since you will be coming back to office to continue working on the document, you just leave it open. But when you get back, you find that your computer has been rebooted and all your work is gone! It is not because of bad RAM or power sag that cause the automatic restart but it’s Automatic Updates! Here’s why…

While some tried to make the signs as obvious as they can get, others went out of their way to be creative. Here are some of the wackiest, funniest or oddest men and women toilet signs.

New Redesign of iGoogle

Posted on 04:31 by Unknown

I noticed earlier today that iGoogle has gone through another slight redesign. Maybe you could consider it a little bit more than a slight redesign though since some of the basic navigation has been switched around.

As you can see from the image above, the navigation and links are now listed in a sidebar on the left-hand side of the page, with each component on the page listed below each page name. Quite a bit different from how the original tabs were displayed at the top of the page as shown .
I like the new layout though. Not really sure why, maybe it’s just because happy with the almost expected sidebar navigation with most sites.

What do you think? Like the new changes or not?

Drowning in Email? Find People, Email & Attachments Instantly:

Posted on 04:24 by Unknown

Xobni is the Outlook plug-in that helps you organize your flooded inbox.

I’ve written about Xobni, the 3rd party Outlook search plug-in, a few different times on the this here website (here, here, and here). They’ve now released version 1.4 and have addressed some speed issues that a number of people mentioned in comments on my post.

The other nice thing they’ve added is the ability to immediately show LinkedIn profile information for anyone you receive an e-mail from. VERY NICE! I’ve already used it to connect with a few more people on the LinkedIn site that I didn’t realize were users.

One more feature worth mentioning is that you can now specifically tell Xobni what folders and files to keep under review for searching purposes later.

AP Microsoft backs Icahn's bid to oust Yahoo board

Posted on 00:32 by Unknown

SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. threw its weight behind investor Carl Icahn's effort to dump Yahoo Inc.'s board, saying Monday that a successful shareholder rebellion would encourage the software maker to renew its bid to buy Yahoo's Internet search engine or possibly the entire company.

The unexpected endorsement gives Icahn a carrot to dangle before Yahoo shareholders as he wages an acrimonious campaign to replace Yahoo's nine directors at the company's annual meeting Aug. 1.

It marks the first time that Microsoft has publicly sided with Icahn since the billionaire investor launched his attempted coup nearly eight weeks ago.

The two sides decided they could work together after Icahn held "frequent" discussions with Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and some of his top lieutenants during the past week, according to a letter that Icahn sent Monday to Yahoo shareholders.

Industry analysts said Icahn now has more credibility with Yahoo shareholders because he has been arguing that a purge of Yahoo's board is the only way to salvage a deal with Microsoft.

"This breathes new life into Icahn's proposal," said Stanford Group analyst Clayton Moran. "It really pushes the power to Icahn and his board (nominees)."

The prospect that a changing of the guard at Yahoo might pave the way to a friendly deal with Microsoft lifted Yahoo shares $2.56, or 12 percent, to finish Monday at $23.91.

Echoing previous remarks in its battle with Icahn, Yahoo questioned Microsoft's interest in buying the entire company.

"If Microsoft and Mr. Ballmer really want to purchase Yahoo, we again invite them to make a proposal immediately," Yahoo said.

But Icahn said Microsoft doesn't want to risk making a bid under Yahoo's current regime, because the software maker fears Yahoo's management would make more poor decisions during an antitrust review that would take at least nine months.

"If the current board and management team of Yahoo mismanage the company (and their recent track record is far from reassuring), Microsoft would be putting its money at risk and a great deal could be lost," Icahn wrote in his letter to shareholders.

Microsoft's willingness to work with Icahn undermines one of Yahoo's chief arguments for re-electing its board.

Yahoo has maintained that it would be foolhardy to back Icahn's slate of alternate nominees because Icahn had no concrete ideas besides selling the company to Microsoft — something that Yahoo has been depicting as a pipe dream since Microsoft withdrew a $47.5 billion offer in early May.

Microsoft reinforced that perception by refusing to revive its bid last month even after Yahoo's board signaled its willingness to accept the earlier offer.

With Microsoft in Icahn's corner, "the dynamic has changed," Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Jeffrey Lindsay said. "There is now a rationale for voting for Icahn's board because there now seems to be a real possibility for a deal again."

Monday's turn of events amplifies the pressure on Yahoo co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang, whose handling of the earlier negotiations with Microsoft infuriated many shareholders.

Yahoo's stock price had plunged by more than 30 percent to fall below $20 during Yang's first six months as CEO. Then, in January, Microsoft raised hopes for a quick windfall with its unsolicited takeover bid, only to be repeatedly rebuffed.

If he seizes control of the board, Icahn has promised to fire the 39-year-old Yang as CEO and replace him with a more seasoned leader.

Yang has been meeting with Yahoo's major stockholders during the past week, hoping to persuade them to give him a chance to prove the Sunnyvale-based company is worth more than the $33 per share that Microsoft previously offered.

Ballmer withdrew that bid after Yang sought $37 per share — a height the stock hasn't reached in 2 1/2 years.

In its Monday statement, Microsoft didn't mention how much it thinks Yahoo is worth now.

Industry analysts estimated Microsoft would likely pay anywhere from $28 to $33 per share if it takes another stab at swallowing Yahoo whole.

"Microsoft is still asking Yahoo shareholders to make a big decision with incomplete information," said Standard & Poor's Internet analyst Scott Kessler. "I could still see a scenario where the Yahoo board is replaced and Microsoft comes in with a bid that is lower than people want. Then what do you do?"

Microsoft more recently has been trying to pry away Yahoo's search engine for $1 billion, plus an additional $8 billion investment for a 16 percent stake in Yahoo's remaining operations.

Yahoo instead opted for an online advertising partnership with rival Google Inc. that is supposed to boost its annual revenue by $800 million. That alliance faces an antitrust review by the U.S. Justice Department because Google and Yahoo combined control more than 80 percent of the U.S. search advertising market.

In its Monday statement, Yahoo asserted Microsoft is trying to use Icahn to engineer a purchase of Yahoo's search engine in a deal that would hurt the company in the long run, by hindering its ability to compete in the Internet's rapidly growing ad market.

What’s the Point of Water-Proof Gadgets?

Ok, I understand some people need to take cameras underwater, and I’m pretty sure waterproof flashlights would be really useful. But then again, why would you need a waterproof flash drive (it can be securely wrapped in plastic for a trip), waterproof speakers, and a waterproof monitor?

I really don’t see any practical use for some of the gadgets recently featured by PC Magazine as “Water-Friendly.” Sure, it’s probably pretty novel to look at pictures while under the water, but would it really be useful? Would any of us be able to maximize using gadgets in wet or submerged environments?

Bypass That Pesky YouTube Blocking

Posted on 03:15 by Unknown

it’s understandable that corporate sys ads want to keep the company bandwidth free, but we all must enjoy our videos! Work done for the day but have nothing better to do? Here are two ways to bypass that pesky YouTube blocking:

Use a Proxy. A proxy fools the office’s filters by disguising YouTube or any other verboten site. Some proxies are better than others, providing practically the same online experience that you’d enjoy if you didn’t have to hide from that damn admin. A good proxy is weprox.com. Just visit the site, enter the address you want to visit, and click on Begin Browsing!

An AdSense Tip You Cannot Afford To Ignore

Posted on 01:00 by Unknown

Facts About AdSense

According to the Google AdSense Terms & Conditions, you are allowed to place up to three ad units and three link units on a single page. If you have added the AdSense code to your theme template, you don't even have to worry about this. The code will automatically display ad units up to three times. For example, on my main page I show my last 10 posts. In my theme template, I have added my AdSense code at the end of my "post" template. Theoretically, the ad units should therefore display at the end of all 10 posts. But this is not the case. The code is smart enough to display ad units the correct number of times.

I recently learned that Google displays the ads on your page in order of value. This means that the highest paying ad of the three will be displayed first. Google considers the "first" ad to be the first block of AdSense code it sees in the final markup of your page's HTML.

Capitalizing on These Facts

When I learned this interesting fact about highest paying ads displaying first, it caused me to take another look at where I was displaying my Google Ads. Originally, I only had three ad units displayed at the bottom of the first three posts. I realized this was a huge waste of a valuable ad spot! Most people don't rFacts About AdSenseead an entire post from start to finish. They'll skim the first paragraph or two and decide if its worth finishing. Often they will get the information they need before the end of the article. Or in my case...before they get to the ad! Since the first ad is the most valuable, I wanted to change my design to highlight this ad unit and put it in a spot that catches the reader's attention.

To further capitalize on this valuable first ad, I decided to make it an image ad to really spark the reader's interest. It will take up more real estate, but by selecting "Image Only" ads when creating my AdSense code, you can increase your chances of getting more clicks. In my opinion, the entire world has become desensitized to Google Text Ads. Without even trying, their eyes just skip right over them. An image ad, on the other hand, can still be attractive and effective at grabbing the reader's attention.

I decided to put the first ad at the top of my Buzz Sponsors section which can be seen in my sidebar to the right.

Houston, We Have a Problem!

Remember earlier that I said the Google AdSense code is smart enough to display the correct number of ad units? In my case, it was displaying all three units in the first three posts. My blog platform generates these posts before it generates the side bar. How then can I make the FIRST ad unit appear at the top of my side bar? Thanks to the magic of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the answer to this question is not as hard as you might think.

Updating Your Template

Most blog templates that have a sidebar use an amazing (but often misunderstood) CSS property called float. This property tells a browser to display an HTML element to the left or the right side of its parent element. The beauty of the float property is that when it is applied, the content being floated can occur BEFORE or after the rest of the content. It will look the same either way.

This works because the side bar has been give the property of float: right, which can be found if you look in your theme's style sheet file. This means that the sidebar content will be pushed to the right side of its container element and the rest of the content will flow around it. It doesn't matter if the float content is generated before or after the rest of the content. Check out this article if you want to learn more about the CSS Float property.

Windows Vista Activation Permanently Cracked + Proof

Posted on 03:58 by Unknown

Someone by the nickname of Dr. Chang has managed to permanently activate Windows without buying it! I’m not sure about this because I have not tried Windows Vista and the crack yet. However, Dr. Chang has included screenshots to proof that it’s true that he managed to crack Windows Vista activation. Dr. Chang tried pushing the date to Year 2016 (ten years ahead) and restarting several times, then moved the date back to 2006, the only thing that expired is his Antivirus. No more 180 days expiration problem and able to successfully receive Windows Updates for Windows Vista.

Continue reading to see the screenshots and also to download Dr. Chang’s Windows Vista permanent activation crack.

Test System Stability By Putting Heavy Load on System Resources

Posted on 03:44 by Unknown
If you’re a computer tech person who assembles new computers everyday or even a consumer who just purchased a new computer, it is important to test the system stability by putting heavy load on system resources. Anyone who has used computers for any period of time will understand the importance of having a stable system. The cost of a hardware failure can be enormous. If you are lucky your data will only become inaccessible while faulty components are replaced. If you’re unlucky you can lose your files completely or have them permanently corrupted. Even if you have good backups, you can still lose days of work returning the PC to its pre-failure state.
Burnintest computer
When I ordered a dedicated server from Softlayer, they too ran a stress test using Passmark BurnInTest to make sure that the server’s hardware are stable before handing the server to me. Passmark BurnInTest is a very good PC reliability and load testing software but it is not free. Here is a free tool called HeavyLoad which you can easily use to test your system stability.

HeavyLoad is intended to stress all resources of a PC (like CPU, RAM, harddisk, network, operating system, etc.) in order to test, if it will run reliable under heavy load. This is useful for testing important file or database servers before using them productively, or just to check if your new PC might get too hot when used intensively.

Download HeavyLoad

To stress your PC or server, HeavyLoad writes a large test-file to the temp folder, it allocates physical and virtual memory and it draws patterns in its window. When you’ve used HeavyLoad, memory will be fragmented and the swap file could become quite large. So you should restart Windows after using HeavyLoad. If HeavyLoad has not been terminated normally because of an unstable PC or operating system, a large test file may be left in one of your temp directories on your PC. You can manually delete the temp file from temporary directory or just run Disk Cleanup.

You should run it as long as you want to test your PC or server, at least several hours. HeavyLoad can run on all Windows platform. Newest version includes features to use multicore processors to full capacity, full support for Windows Server 2008 and some minor changes and improvements.

HeavyLoad is not as powerful as Passmark BurnInTest but it is capable to test the main components on a computer and it’s FREE. It is also portable and you can carry around with you in your USB flash drive. Very handy tool for any computer users.
